In 1782, Countess Ekaterina P. Shuvalova acquired a plot of land in the Basmannaya Sloboda to establish an estate. In 1831, the property was transferred to Nikolay Vasilievich Levashov, a hero of the Patriotic War and a personal acquaintance of the Pushkin family. The Levashov boyar family began reconstructing the estate, and two one-story wings were built on the grounds. From 1833 to 1856, the writer Pyotr Y. Chaadayev lived in one of the wings. Because of the street's name, the author was known as the Basmannyy Philosopher. His apartment consisted of three rooms, and a literary salon was held there every Monday. It was in this very place that Chaadayev wrote one of his most famous works, "Apologia of a Madman". Today, the building is recognized as a regional cultural heritage site and is used for commercial purposes.
